Certification Comparisons

Our training courses are the most comprehensive K9 and handler training available……period. Our in-house certification guarantees that your K9 team will be able to pass any state or national certification standard you may choose to use for your department.

We know of no other training offered by any training facility that better prepares a K9 team to safely and effectively begin street work. Our demanding and comprehensive testing ensures that your K9 team is prepared for real world scenarios. All K9 teams must pass our in-house certification in order to graduate our courses.

Below is a brief summary of our Patrol K9 and Narcotics Detection K9 courses and certifications requirements for use in comparing to other K9 training programs and certifications:

 

PATROL K9

  • Obedience

Our certification- Must pass 100% of off leash obedience exercises with no repeated commands, no double commands, and no corrections. Significant distractions provided during testing.

Other certifications- Some failure to perform or command repeating permitted. Some certifications only require as little as 75% compliance during exercises, repeated commands, or verbal corrections. Generally no distractions provide during exercises.

  • Apprehension

Our certification- Single and multiple subject apprehension, apprehension from vehicle, armed subject apprehension, vehicle extraction, apprehension with gunfire including cover-to-cover repositioning of K9 team during exercise.

Other certifications-  Single subject apprehension only, no apprehension from vehicle, no vehicle extraction exercise, simple gunfire testing from fleeing suspect, no armed subject apprehension.

  • Building Search

Our certification- Building search conducted off-leash with no audible commands given. Directive search conducted with hand signals and silent whistle. “Clear, down, and move up” technique used during testing to maintain tactical advantage. K9 must remain in sight of handler at all times. K9 must indicate location of decoy and await handler instructions for apprehension.

Other certifications- Search often permitted either on-leash or off-leash. Handler not required to maintain visual contact with K9. Audible commands allowed. No tactical requirements. K9 must locate decoy and provide bark and hold or bite and hold, no handler discretion allowed.

  • Open Area Search

Our certification- Open or wooded area search conducted off-leash with no audible commands given. Directive search conducted with hand signals and silent whistle. K9 must remain in sight of handler at all times. K9 must indicate location of decoy and await handler instructions for apprehension.

Other certifications- Search often permitted either on-leash or off-leash. Handler not required to maintain visual contact with K9. Audible commands allowed. No tactical requirements. K9 must locate decoy and provide bark and hold or bite and hold, apprehension not at discretion of handler.

  • Article Search/Evidence Recovery

Our certification-  Search area is one acre in size with three articles hidden. Two articles contain human scent and one article void of human scent. Handler must demonstrate search technique utilizing relevant wind. K9 must locate articles and indicate by sitting within 2 feet of article. K9 not allowed to touch or retrieve article.

Other certifications- Search area usually 30x30 or 60x60 feet. Three articles all containing human scent. K9 permitted to retrieve or damage article/evidence.

  • Tracking

Our certification-  K9 must be scent discriminate. Track must be 1 hour old and minimum of 1 mile in length over multiple surfaces. General area of starting point but no direction of travel provided. At least two other tracks in area of starting point. K9 must locate correct track from scent article and proceed. Two additional fresher cross tracks intersect decoy track at later point on track. K9 must air scent and alert handler to presence of decoy at an appropriate distance on arriving at decoy’s position.

Other certifications- K9 not required to be scent discriminate. No scent article used. Track usually ½ hour to 1 hour old and 300yds.- 1 mile in length. Cross tracks often older not fresher than decoy track. No air scent alert required.

NARCOTICS DETECTION K9

  • Obedience and Agility

Our certification- Must pass 100% of off-leash obedience exercises and agility exercises with no repeated commands, no double commands, or corrections during testing.

Other certifications- Generally require no obedience or only on-leash obedience. Testing usually allows some performance failure or command repeating.

  • Narcotics Detection

Our certification- Must locate and indicate 100% of a total of 16 hides. (4 in vehicles, 4 in building, 4 in packages, 4 in outside area including buried hide). Enticements and distractions provided during testing.

Other certifications- Generally require only 4 to12 hides. Testing requirements usually allow  some failure to locate or false alert percentage.
